Lunch.

I have a quick poll of the audience. A poll about food. So of course this is serious. Food is always a serious matter.

What do you kids eat for lunch? I'm bored with lunch.

I'm a teacher. I have 20 minutes. It has to be quick, yet delicious.

My go-to items are typically a sandwich (usually PBJ or ham), cheese stick, apple slices, sometimes yogurt, maybe chips of some kind (if I didn't eat them all the night before while watching TV). This year I've been kind of scared to eat much peanut butter. I have some students with severe allergies.

I feel like lately I've had a lot of salad and frozen-somethings. They're full of sodium though and those get tired and played out super quick. Plus there aren't very many frozen entrees that I really like. I refuse to buy any with meat of any kind. I'm not a vegetarian, heck no. I eat myself some meat. I just eat REAL meat. Not that chewy, funk, frozen for 527 years meat. Barf all over the place. I'm not eating that mess.

So. I need some help. Give me some ideas. What do you eat for lunch?

Go out to eat? Please. Not an option. Refer back to sentence #3.

Eat in the cafeteria? Not on your life. Plus I found out this year that the average school cafeteria meal is roughly 1300 calories. Use up my whole day's caloric intake on more fake meat? No. I'd rather go outside and eat playground mulch. Or drive to McDonald's and eat 1300 calories the right way.

Eat leftovers? To that I say, what leftovers? This girl doesn't cook herself dinner.

My tired taste buds thank you in advance for any new and delicious lunch ideas.

  1. Soup? Tuna? Sketti? Cereal? Cold pasta salad? I used to get a breakfast biscuit and warm it up for lunch.

  2. I normally pack a sandwich or have leftovers, but I have, on occasion had cereal and I have stolen one of my hubby's breakfast sandwiches for lunch. Good protein and it keeps me full til school's out! My lunch is pretty boring and routine, so I can't help out that much. I always have a sandwich, yogurt and fruit, along with some sort of caffeine! Not giving that up! And I totally hear you on school lunch! No way! I forgot my lunch on the last day and thought I was going to die from food poisoning! I felt like crap the rest of the day! Good luck on your lunch quest!

  3. at school we have 4 of us who rotate lunch duties. So Each day a different one of us makes lunch for the rest of us, then Fridays we are on our own. so, this week on Tuesday I made veggie soup; like the WW kind. I also brought in cheese sticks, oranges, and some cranberry almond biscotti cracker things. On Monday another girl made roasted veggie soup. Today another member made edamame salad. Other go-to meals for us are turkey sandwiches, fruit salad, taco salad, regular salad, veggie tacos.. stuff like that. It is the BEST system ever!!!! we have fruit every day, and usually veggies in some form. It is super easy, healthy and delicious.

  4. Same problem. I'm sad to report the chicken rings are even worse this year.

    1. Our lunch just isn't good this year. I don't even buy on pizza days anymore. The sweet tea isn't even good either.

  5. -wraps
-cereal (I buy the milk in the cafeteria)
-leftovers (I purposely make a lot at dinner when we have chili or pasta so I have extra for the next day)
    -Lara bar and fruit

I'm more of a snack person than a sit down and eat a meal person. Lunch is in front of my computer or while I am grading. I just don't have time at school to sit for 20 whole minutes and do nothing but eat. Good luck!

    1. I like wraps. I don't like cereal (I'm strange). I love some chili and pasta. Maybe I need to start making more stuff like that. Good idea.

My problem is that I'm a big meal person and a snack throughout the whole day kind of person. It's getting me in trouble.

  6. Sad to say I have no solution for you as I often just keep a package of tortillas in the frig with cheese and give it a zap. That and a soda and I am on my way. I do want to say that I enjoy your blog! Great humor.

  9. That last anonymous response was not Deb--but this one is!! So there are at least 2 teachers shoving hummus and crackers in their pie holes during lunch:) Hm..how 'bout pie?

  10. I too am a big fan of hummus especially on flatbread. It's also good with sliced tomatoes. For lunch, I do eat hummus, soup and crackers, leftovers, fruit/veggies with spread, etc. Leftovers are the easiest though. I pack it up when I'm putting away dinner.

  11. LOL your post cracked me up! My fave part was the fake meat in lean cuisines! I am SO WITH YOU. I only eat the meatless frozen meals, lol!

Our school lunches aren't too bad, and they are much better this year. We are about to get a salad bar!! Our cafeteria even serves hummus (individual packs) with chips this year. I'm a horrible eater (I love me some junk food, not gonna lie), but I've been trying to be a little better lately since I started boot camp and don't want to ruin my workouts!

I love to have yogurt mixed with either granola or blueberries, hummus with pretzel chips or pita chips, leftover taco soup/tortilla soup/chili mac from the crock pot. I also like to keep nuts for snacking--cashews, almonds or pistachios.

    I'm hungry now.
